“Who Knows Where It Goes” is an uncollected short story that appeared in Ellery Queen in January 2010. It was inspired, of course, by the cratering of the world economy two years earlier. It’s a story of hard times, and how a resourceful man can adapt to them. It’s a story, too, about how such a man might explore his own capabilities, and find out if what he once did is something he still can do.
The title is from a song by the remarkable Junior Burke.

This story is short but sweet. For those of us Keller fans, you will enjoy the story and root for this guy to get through the rough economy. If you have talents, don't waste them....or Do 'waste them.' Enjoyable read. It's Block, so enough said!
Mr. Block is an expert at painting real characters even in short works. By far my favorite author! Thank you sir.
Another great LB story. This one surprised me a bit. Everything he writes is worth reading and he is a master of short story.Fun story.
Or maybe not so good people find a way to survive. A fun little story that talks about a way to survive the recession. It's not for everyone but it is a solution.
Lawrence Block delivers a compact little gem in "Who Knows Where It Goes." The economy is in the dumper, and a man's got to do what a man's got to do, right? So figures the down and out character, Morton Colliard. With a ruined business, a house, a wife, and a baby on the way, Colliard needs to fall back on what he knows, before all the college education. He needs something that's recession proof. Yeah, that's the ticket. Read this story. It's got a nice swift punch in it that might just take you off guard.
Lawrence Block is one of my all-time favorite writers, and in this short story his talent still shines. However, most fans of the Keller series will, I think, feel some disappointment, as I did, that the story was not more original. I was also disappointed in its brevity. At $3 for a 30 minute read, I frankly feel a little cheated. What is that, 10 cents a minute? Publishers of e-books, and authors of course, need to be wary of this trend lest greed outpace value. Tick, tick, tick.
